How to Write a Good Essay

Most online courses involve writing essays. Thus essay writing is an essential skill that every student must hone in order to excel in their studies. In this article, we provide some essential guidelines that one can apply to become an efficient essay writer:

Read and understand the prompt:  Your professor will provide you with an essay prompt or questions. Before you start your writing, read them and understand what you are being asked to do. If something is not clear, seek for clarification.

Create an essay outline: Use the essay questions to structure an outline (should contain the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion). Briefly state what each section will cover and the number of words you will use. Below is an example of an essay outline:

Essay prompt: Write a 2-page essay discussing the impact of COVID-19 on the global economy.

Essay Outline

  • Introduction: Provide a specific introduction to the topic. State the key points that will be covered in the essay (COVID-19 has led to unemployment, inflation, poverty hikes, and loss of human capital). State the thesis statement as the last sentence of the paragraph… (100 words)

Body Paragraphs

  • Paragraph 1: Explain how coronavirus has led to unemployment. Provide some examples and statistics. Give some citations… (100 words)
  • Paragraph 2: Explain how COVID created inflation. Provide some relevant charts/graphs. Give some examples and citations… (100 words)
  • Paragraph 3: Discuss how COVID has hiked poverty levels globally. State this is the main point in this paragraph and give some evidence to support the subsequent arguments… (100 words)
  • Paragraph 4: Discuss how coronavirus has led to the loss of human capital … (100 words)
  • Conclusion: The first sentence should restate the thesis statement. Provide a recap of the essay… (100 words)

NB: An essay outline will help you ensure you have covered all the sections of the prompt. It will also help you work within the allocated word count without surpassing it. Most importantly it makes your writing easy and saves time.

Do your research: After writing your outline, start conducting your research from reliable sources, such as textbooks, reputable websites, or peer-reviewed journal articles. Properly paraphrase the information and acknowledge the authors by citing and referencing the sources.

Paragraphing: Your essay should be presented in paragraphs as demonstrated in the outline. The first one is the introduction which can either be specific or general. In the introduction, you need to give some background information on the topic, the main points, and most importantly, the thesis statement. In the body paragraphs, apply the PEEL format.

PPEL paragraph format

The PEEL format will help you structure your paragraphs in a coherent manner. It will help you ensure that every single paragraph is covering a certain topic or idea related to the thesis statement. It will also ensure there is a logical flow between the paragraphs.

Formal tone and ensure clarity: Write your essay in a clear, concise, and formal tone. Avoid slang, colloquialism, clichés, and jargon unless it is suitable or specifically required for your topic. Avoid awkward sentences or “awks” as they affect the quality of your paper content. You can learn what awkward sentences are and how to avoid them in this article.

Proofread: Proofreading your paper is very essential. This will help you revise and edit the content accordingly. You will be able to review it for coherence, clarity, and grammar errors.
