Warehouse and Inventory Management ICA3: Individual Assignment Guide

Forecasting is the basis for many supply chain decisions and also the key for efficient supply chain planning. This ICA will cover topics in Demand Forecasting, Forecasting Methods & Techniques, and Qualitative & Quantitative Forecasting. This assignment requires learners to research and forecast the demand of a given case study using the various techniques acquired in the module.

Learners will submit a typewritten report including any supporting appendices on their research and demand analysis.

Assignment Requirements

Forecasting is a critical function of any business. It enables the company to plan and optimise its resources to generate maximum profit.

Learners are to apply any relevant concepts from the module and must demonstrate evidence of quality and credible research to support their analyses where necessary.

Each learner must submit the assignment report in the following format:

  • Introduction
  • Qualitative analysis (please refer to section 4 below for Part A Qualitative Analysis pertaining to the report requirements)
  • Quantitative analysis (please refer to section 5 below for Part B Quantitative Analysis pertaining to the report requirements)
  • Conclusion

Part A Qualitative Analysis

 Answer all the following questions:

Case 1: eRetailer SHEIN

Shien, the Chinese fashion giant pledged it will improve standards at supplier factories with a $70m (£56m) investment over the next five years. Peter Pernot-Day, head of strategy and commercial affairs at Shein, tells Drapers how the business is shaking up its operations, using tech to optimise its supply chain and how it plans to tackle sustainability challenges. We are a tech-enabled and innovation-led company. How do you take over 5,000 suppliers and ensure quality, consistency, and speed to meet this on-demand capability? The only way we can do that is digitally, so from the very beginning we’ve been building this supplier management system. This platform allows us to track the suppliers by capacity and by inventory levels and they have information about what orders are coming down the pipeline so  they can staff themselves to produce to meet projected demand. But you can always squeeze more efficiency out of these systems. For example, is there a way in which you can measure demand more accurately? As we expand our supply chain, are we making it available in other languages for other suppliers?

Case is adapted and compiled from various internet sources.

  1. Explain why demand forecasting is a critical function of any business, regardless of the stage of the supply chain the company is operating in. Explain the differences, including the advantages and disadvantages, between Qualitative and Quantitative forecasting.
  2. Based on the information provided in the Shein case, evaluate the following qualitative forecasting Suggest, with justifications, the most appropriate method that Shein should use to forecast demand for its clothings.
  • Delphi method
  • Survey of sales force
  • Visionary forecast

Part B Quantitative Analysis

 Perform the following forecasts:

  1. Perform the following forecast, with data set in Appendix 1, using:
  • Static Winter forecasting technique and determine the most appropriate periodicity in your analysis.
  • Simple Exponential Smoothing technique and determine the most appropriate α (alpha) value in your
  1. From your forecast above, analyze and suggest with justifications the most suitable technique to forecast the demand for sandwiches.

Assignment Submissions

Assignment report based on the format and questions stated above in the assignment requirements, qualitative and quantitative analysis sections. The written report must be in MS Word format, of not more than 6 pages excluding appendices – Arial Font size 12 with single spacing.

  1. Introduction: Provide an introduction of the key discussion points for the

2.  Main discussion points:

  • Part A Qualitative Analysis for case study on Shein or Airbus (refer to section 4 above).
  • Part B Quantitative Analysis for data pertaining to demand for bicycle or mobile phone (refer to section 5 above). An excel spreadsheet depicting the computation of the forecasting based on the required data must be attached to the report.
  1. Conclusion: A summary of the key findings.

In this assessment, you must not use generative artificial intelligence (AI) to generate any materials or content in relation to the assessment task.
