How to Do a Proctored Online Exam

Online exams or virtual examinations are conducted remotely using the Internet. Online exams can be in different formats such as essay questions, short answers, multiple-choice, or a combination of these. Like classroom exams, virtual examinations are often time-bound and supervised through a proctor and webcam.  In this article, we provide you with some tips on how you can successfully do your proctored online exam:

Review the exam requirements: Your examiner will give you some exam requirements that you need to comprehend before you begin. Read the requirements carefully and if something is not clear, just ask for clarification. Take note of important details like the time the exam will take, its format, or the topics to be covered if disclosed.

Prepare for the exam: Put the things you will need in order. These include your laptop, calculators, pens, papers, etc. Also, set up your workplace. Ensure you have a stable internet connection and that your devices are working properly. Actually, it is advisable you test your equipment (microphone, webcam, internet connection, etc.) to make sure they are in good condition. You should check whether any software (e.g. a specific browser) is installed and running smoothly on your computer.  Make sure the room where you’ll take the exam is quiet and distraction-free. Get rid of materials like textbooks and notes that are not allowed during the exam.

Complete the check-in process: Log in to the proctoring system and complete the check-in process. For example, you may be required to provide your identification, show your workplace to the proctor, or take a photo.

Take the exam and abide by the instructions: Start your exam and work on each question carefully. Pay close attention to the remaining time and pace yourself to ensure you have enough time to answer all questions. Avoid spending too much time on one question as you may do so at the expense of another one. If the system allows you to backtrack, consider reviewing your answers as you proceed. Follow the instructions issued by the proctor. These may include not using your phone or other devices, not tampering with your webcam, or not leaving your seat during the exam.

Complete your exam: After answering all questions, review your answers carefully to ensure they are correct. Also, check to ensure every question is attended to. If you had uploaded some files, check to make sure you uploaded the correct ones. Double-check everything and after you’re satisfied, submit your exam according to the instructions provided.
