Sample Single Subject Research

Applied Behavior Analysis

Applied Single Subject Project Presentation
Students will design and present a single subject research study based on a given case study. Students will define the dependent variable, target behavior in measurable and observable terms, utilize an appropriate measurement system, design systems to ensure the reliability and validity of data, and present an empirically based intervention utilizing an appropriate single-subject experimental design. Students will also include graphed data.

Case Study

John is a 12-year-old boy who has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Sometimes when in class at school, John can “act out,” particularly when the teacher is asking questions that John does not know the answer to. This can happen several times during the day, on average, 5 times.

When John acts out, he will yell profanities and kick over his desk or the desk of another student. The class is a general education one, and other students complain when John has one of his outbursts.

Once John is told by the teacher to please stand the desk up and return to his seat, he is typically compliant with this request, although, usually, the teacher has to repeat her instruction up to 4 times before John complies. If he returns to his seat after the teacher asks the first time, John receives a sticker on a chart.

Your presentation must include the following:

  1. Identify the dependent variable (target behavior).
  2. Define target behavior in measurable, observable, and measurable terms.
  3. Identify what type of measurement system will be used (frequency, duration, latency, etc.).
  4. After your observation period, the data come back as follows (see chart below):
  5. Graph the data
  6. Determine if the intervention was working
  7. State some issues with validity or reliability with this intervention
